At the April membership meeting Local 189 members reached an agreement on 2 candidates for political support.
AFSCME Local 189 would like officially endorse Nick Fish and Andrea Valderrama.
Nick Fish was elected to the Portland City Council Position No. 2 in a special election in 2008. Commissioner Fish has continued his service by being re-elected in 2010 and 2014. Commissioner Fish leads the Bureau of Environmental Services and the Portland Water Bureau. He serves as the City Council liaison to Elders in Action, Age-Friendly Cities, the Regional Arts and Culture Council (RACC), Venture Portland – which supports small businesses in our community, the Portland Rose Festival Foundation, and the Governor’s Regional Solutions Advisory Committee.
Nick Fish has shown in several ways that he has the ability, desire and leadership skills to be the Commissioner we need for Portland City Council Position No. 2.
Commissioner Fish has worked very closely with Local 189 and the other City unions during Contract Bargaining and other joint effort ventures. He is passionate about civic engagement and service.

AFSCME local 189 would also like to announce our Endorsement for Andrea Valderrama for Portland City Council Position no. 3
Andrea Valderrama’s life experience, community leadership with a combination of policy expertise makes her a unique candidate in the race for City Council. Andrea’s parents came to the United States from Peru and grandparents worked here as day laborers giving her a strong value in Labor relations. She supported herself and family by cleaning houses after school and putting herself through college earning her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Oregon.
Andrea has become one of Portland’s most respected new leaders, demonstrating policy and management skills needed to be successful in Portland’s commission form of government. Andrea has tackled complex public policies including housing, transportation and election reform while working in Commissioner’s and Mayor’s offices. She has also demonstrated an ability to work well with other City Commissioners while holding bureau leadership and staff accountable.
Andrea is a genuine leader in education, while serving in her second term on the David Douglas school board, Andrea is working towards improving graduation rates, career technical training, and increasing college enrollment.
It is through this hard work, dedication, passion, and effort that Local 189 is proud to announce our endorsement for Andrea Valderrama.
